Taking Custom Building Products from B2B to B2C, with the Swipe of a Finger
A grout, custom tile flooring and shower installations company, took a different kind of makeover, and it completely transformed the business of Custom Building Products.
Custom Building Products wanted to take their mobile website and bring it over to a mobile app. The idea was standard. And the sitemap, fonts and colors were essentially already planned out for us on their desktop website and pre-established UI Kit.
But the idea grew bigger. After a mobile site, the Custom Building Products team saw the advantage of having a tablet app for consumers looking to work on specific flooring projects. So, in addition to transferring their website to a handheld-friendly site, we worked with them to add additional features handy for DIY floor-installers or experienced contractors to download on their phone, all from the Custom Building app.
Getting Down to the Wire
It was the easiest process LEAP has experienced, to date. We sent over wireframes to Custom Building Products, and before we knew it, we were on to the design phase of the app.
Of course, having a mobile-friendly website is imperative for any business. But when that site turns into an app worthy for contractors to download, a business has set itself apart from the other flooring experts.
In addition to transferring the website to an app,
we also built out an interior and material calculator. These gamification features allowed downloaders to enter the specifications of their project into the app, choose the material they wanted to design with, then obtain a project cost estimate.
And if you couldn’t quite choose the material yet, LEAP was also tasked with building out a color palate of all products Custom Building Products sold. We took the pigments of their flooring tiles, ranging from Starry Night and Raw Sugar to Delorean Grey and Urban Putty.

Additional, Additional Features
Custom Building Products cares about the simplicity and UX of their site. They wanted visitors to be able to find what they were looking for quickly and hassle-free.
To accomplish this best on the mobile site, we took extra care to categorize each product, provide them with Parent IDs and write detailed descriptions of its use, making everything easy to find and difficult to ignore.
Because every DIYer learns new homecare tips from YouTube videos (thank you, Mike Rowe), we embedded Custom Building Products’s YouTube channel into their site. So each project “how-to” is just as easy to find as the products needed to complete them.
Transforming the Business
The app took Custom Building Products’ expertise to a whole new level of business. What started as B2B company was quickly transformed to a B2C, allowing the once-small company to send their products from manufacturer to retailer, such large-chain department stores, such as Home Depot, Menards and Lowe’s, or manufacturer to distributor.
Custom Building Products was no longer an online-only store. Consumers would be able to shop their products at home improvement stores near them. And like everything else with the Custom site, we wanted to make the locations easy to find.
