The main difference: Wal-Mart isn’t participating in the conversation, which is a no-no in the social world.

- It is always important to begin with the end in mind. - Success cannot be determined instantly. It takes time. You won’t get a million followers overnight just by signing up on Twitter, and your sales won’t double the day you launch your Facebook page. Over time, as you commit the hours that are necessary to be a part of the conversation and show that you are a participant and a listener, your audience will start to grow and take action.
- Let your audience know who you are and what you are doing. Never try to fool the market because the market will find you out. Once consumers discover that you tried to fool them, your campaign becomes worthless, and all your time and effort is wasted.
- Understand that you don’t have total control over your message in a social media channel.
