Will Browning has been a Senior Developer at LEAP for 8 years, but computer graphics development and 3D content creation have been an interest/hobby of his for the last 15 or 20 years. We knew he was the perfect fit to really test out the Oculus Rift.

What is Oculus Rift?

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that is worn like a large pair of goggles, and is capable of accurately tracking the wearer’s head position and rotation. It displays a separate image for each eye, enabling the wearer to see a fully-immersive 3D scene. The Rift also tracks head movements, allowing the direction the wearer is looking to change in real-time, fully immersing them in the scene.

How are you using the Oculus Rift? 

I have one of the development kits and have mostly been using it to explore the capabilities of the device and how we can use it to deliver new and unique experiences for our clients and their customers.

What does it enable us to do?

With the Oculus Rift, we can put the wearer into a fully immersive world that gives them the illusion they are actually there. Unlike a TV or computer monitor, it's possible to create an experience with the Rift where no matter what direction the user turns their head (up, down, side to side, or even 180 degrees behind them), they will see the world or environment we put them in.

How have other companies/brands used it?

The spotlight of focus for the Rift has primarily been gaming, but agencies like LEAP are definitely aware of VR and are keen to developing new experiences for clients and their customers.

How is Oculus Rift beneficial to LEAP/our clients?

A healthcare client could give a patient and their family the ability to step into a nursing center and take a tour without ever leaving their home. A vehicle manufacturer could let a potential buyer customize the interior, paint job, etc. and see exactly what they would be buying even if that particular combination didn't exist on the lot. The Rift can also be used for fun experiences as a means to draw in crowds at trade shows.
